On June 22, 2022, the Government of Canada published the Single-use Plastics Prohibition Regulations. To prevent plastic pollution, the Regulations prohibit the manufacture, import, and sale of six categories of single-use plastics that pose a threat to the environment.
The federal effective date is December 20, 2023.
The manufacture and import of the banned items will be prohibited as of December 20, 2022.

Montréal has passed a by-law banning certain single-use plastic items in restaurants and other food establishments. The by-law will come into force on March 28, 2023 but, in the meantime, establishments can begin the transition toward compliance.
The by-law prohibits the distribution of eight single-use plastic items, whether or not they are compostable, in food service establishments and restaurants in Montréal. This includes trays (except for meat and fish), plates, containers and their covers, cups, glasses, cup or glass covers, stir sticks and utensils.
